Minecraft Beta 1.7 – Adventure Patch “leaks” so far…

I’ve been keeping an eye on the Mojang employee twitter feeds and I’ve been seeing a bit of information about the upcoming 1.7 update for Minecraft. Though Notch and Jens have agreed to keep the adventuring aspects of the patch a secret, that doesn’t seem to extend to the more normal type of changes, including new additions to the game.

Notch has been busy getting ready for, and being at, E3 lately, so he has been preoccupied. Even so, he’s tweeted a few bits of good information. A friend has saved me the trouble of going through Notch’s tweets with a post on his blog at Encrazed Crafts. So be sure to check that out for the things that Notch has discussed recently!

Jens (@jeb_) has been moved off the Pocket Edition and back on to regular Minecraft. And he has tweeted a few things of very great interest:

  • Added Minecraft shears. Has uses on sheep, leaves, tnt and a fourth thing, which will remain secret for now. (source)

In subsequent tweets he elaborates. The shears diffuse TNT, thank god, that really needed a legit way to do. They are also the only way to get a reasonable amount of wool from sheep, though killing them will still give one block of wool. The shears also destroy placed wool blocks faster than other tools.

  • Heh ok… Time for the piston mod. It’s incredible how much more dull something is when there’s little room left for my own creativity. (source)

So woohoo the piston mod is on the way! He does only say “probably” in version 1.7, but I believe it’ll happen. I’ve been waiting for this  to be included for at least 3 update cycles now. I’ve got some projects to finish up and a lot of things to try out with those pistons! Later he also relents in the face of “nerd rage” and says that he’ll include sticky pistons. Which as far as I’m aware means they pull blocks instead of pushing them. Could be extremely useful.

  • All animals will be more persistent “soon,” so re-growth of wool will be necessary. (source)

This is promising as well! Clearly makes sense to be added along with the shears. Maybe Jens is getting along to really extending the Minecraft farming mechanics!

Those are the big items I’ve seen come through lately, and I’m pretty excited for the direction things seem to be headed! This of course is only the few things that haven’t been completely hushed as part of the big Adventure Update. And with the big E3 news about Minecraft I posted earlier this is shaping up to be one heck of a year for Mojang!

Happy Crafting!

Minecraft at E3: XBox 360 Version Confirmed!

I just saw come across @notch’s twitter feed, that there are now apparently plans in the works for an official XBox 360 version of Minecraft!  Not only is it coming to the 360, but will have full Kinect support! I’ll be looking forward to a whole new series of “Let’s Plays” on YouTube featuring people waggling their bodies around trying to fend off creepers and skeletons.

This news isn’t that exciting for me personally, but it’s great to see Minecraft getting a broader exposure.  I’ll be waiting to find out if the XBox 360 version connects to the same servers as the PC version or if it’s locked into some kind of XBox live implementation.

Release for the 360 version is set to be sometime this winter. Video of the Microsoft press conference can be viewed at GameSpot. Applicable Minecraft footage begins at the 57:00 mark.

Minecraft Happenings at E3

We’re getting a tiny trickle of information out about the Mojang and Minecraft involvement at E3 today.

On the Mojang blog they’ve reposted the article announcing MinecraftChick‘s involvement at the Sony E3 booth. This time though it contains the additional announcement that the guys from The Shaft podcast will be attending the Minecraft Pocket Edition demo play session at E3 on Wednesday, June 8th at 11am. It’ll be a good dynamic to have them there with MinecraftChick, and I would imagine everyone will get a chance to give the Pocket Edition a spin.

The second bit of information about Minecraft Pocket Edition comes from the Sony Ericsson Product Blog, where they talk about all the games that will be available on the phone. Minecraft is featured, including a quick video demo of it:

Hope everyone is enjoying their Minecrafting the past few days, I’ve had work to contend with so it’s almost been more blogging than playing! I’ll be getting more of my “Nether-Ventures” up soon though.

Happy Crafting!

MinecraftChick to demo Minecraft Pocket Edition. Build with Notch at E3.

I just came across this post that my feed reader picked up, apparently before it was deleted from the Mojang website. I don’t know if it was announced too early, or if the plans have changed, but here’s the post re-created from my google reader:

This is apparently sourced from http://mojang.com/2011/06/01/minecraftchick-build-with-notch-at-e3/ but as you can see now 404s. This is not made up, as you can find for yourself that google indexed the post before it was deleted as well.

EDIT: This was just confirmed by MinecraftChick herself on her blog and YouTube channel!

Sounds like it should be a pretty cool event! I guess come to your own conclusion as to why the post was removed, but regardless, Happy Crafting!

A Holiday, E3, and Happy Birthday to Notch!

Notch File Photo

Here’s sending out very happy birthday wishes to Notch, the fantastic creator of Minecraft! We all hope you are able to have a great day and do some things you enjoy.

Aside from celebrating his birthday, Notch has made it known that this Thursday is a national holiday in Sweden. After doing a bit of checking I see that it is Ascension Day. I hope everyone over in Sweden enjoys the holiday.

The third item which is coming up is of course E3! Several of the Mojang crew are going to be in attendance, specifically for a full unveiling of the Minecraft Pocket Edition that we had seen a sneak peek of. I can’t wait to see how it’s coming, as well as what the release plans are for non-android devices. All of this excitement is going to keep Notch away from the office for some time, but he’s promised to keep his laptop nearby in case he has downtime to work on the Minecraft adventure update.

I’ll be skimming the E3 coverage over the next week, so if anything Minecraft related comes up I’ll be sure to post about it! So please keep an eye here, and Happy Crafting!

Minecraft Pocket Edition – First look

A while back I had heard a little bit of talk from the Mojang guys about a version of Minecraft for mobile phones. It sort of stopped being discussed shortly thereafter and I imagine most people, like myself, pretty much forgot about it amidst the excitement of all the new updates to Minecraft Beta.

Well now Mojang has revealed that the Minecraft Pocket Edition has been in the works and is slated to be demoed at the next E3. It will be coming first to the Sony Xperia Play, and then to all Android devices. I’m hoping that an iPhone version is to come at some point, but until it does this is just one more reason that I might take a longer look at an Android device next time I upgrade my phone.

Here is a demo video of Minecraft Pocket Edition being played on the Xperia:

It looks to be just the creative mode at the moment, survival mode is supposed to be coming. I can’t imagine trying to run from a creeper with the controls on a phone though. Maybe the mobs will all be slowed down to compensate. Still, I’m looking forward to see what the final product on mobile devices looks like. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to jump on my SMP server from my phone and continue playing without too much difference from what  the game is like on my PC.

Happy Crafting!
